Below is a little more detailed look at each of the top 3 self study bass guitar lesson courses. While I’m partial to the Teach Me Bass Guitar course since it offers more in-depth lesson, more styles of instruction and more practice materials then any other course I reviewed, I respect that it also may be a bit more expensive then some people may want to spend.

The Learning Dock has only been producing self study music DVD courses for about a year and a half but it looks like they have a winning formula based on Teach Me Bass Guitar.

This course introduces several new features I’ve yet to see in any other bass guitar lessons dvd including: the loop library and real-time fretboard.

Instructor Roy Vogt is one of the most respect Bass Players in America and most can only dream of ever having the chance to study under him as he teaches university level music and bass courses.

Teach Me Bass Guitar is a 10 DVD set of well planned out bass guitar instruction that includes hours of play along videos to practice with, a detailed PDF work book (printed version available at time of order for $34.95) and access to the fastest growing bass community on the net at ThunderRow.com.

Whether you’re a beginner or intermediate bass player Teach Me Bass Guitar is literally the encyclopedia for the bass guitar taught by one of the best players and instructors of our generation. For the price point of $187.50 (currently 25% off) you’re getting more then 16 hours of bass instruction for less then $12 bucks an hour.

NOTE: Teach Me Bass Guitar has recently been awarded the AEGIS Video & File award for excellence in production and Telly Award for excellence in Education.

Master bass instructor Alex Sampon’s beginner program Bass Guitar Secrets is an in depth course that teachs bass players how to effectively move around the fret board.

While this course is primarily a lesson book program, there are some additional multimedia files associated with it (these are linked to from inside the lesson books).

I personally prefer the visual on screen instruction of a DVD video program like Teach Me Bass Guitar, it is understandable that at about half the price, Bass Guitar Secrets has a market for beginner bassists who enjoy learning by reading rather then watching.

There is an active online community as part of this online course and also some exclusive online coaching that comes with each purchase of Bass Guitar Secrets.

FretBoard Forumula, by master Bassist Alex Sampson, is a multimedia driven based course spanning approximately 9 ½ hours of video, audio and online instruction.

The crux of the program includes lessons on musical theory and live demonstrations of techniques on the bass.

The course is available in three versions: Lite, Gold and Platinum. The lite version is a 100% downloadable version of the course available immediately after purchase.

As with Bass Guitar Secrets (above), Fretboard Formula is organized well how ever can be cumbersome to go through if you opt for the Lite version. Full DVD programs such as Teach Me Bass Guitar (TMBG) offer an easy and straight forward way to go thorough video bass lessons using your home DVD player and television.

While there is a ton of course content included with the Fretboard forumla for a few bucks more the TMBG course will take you much further.
