Review of Bass Guitar Secrets
At last the secrets of playing bass guitar are well explained and highlighted, in an interesting multimedia eBook package course created by master bass guitar player Alex Sampson called Bass Guitar Secrets and available through his website with the same name. This guitar course can benefit anyone who wishes to greatly improve his or her skill playing bass guitar. The program teaches both theory and practical skills, and the explanations are clear and relevant.
The course offers a good value, in our opinion: Comparing the cost of the downloadable Bass Guitar Secrets course against the rates for private instruction commonly charged by master bass guitarists (about $40 per half-hour to hour session, in most cities), it’s a great value for people who want to learn to play bass guitar or dramatically improve their existing skills, especially if they’re on a sensible budget.
The promotional wording on the website used to present the course may seem a bit sensational at times, yet the course itself is quite professional and effective. In our opinion, anyone who seeks an economical yet highly effective bass guitar education can learn from the techniques and material taught in the Bass Guitar Secrets course.
The people who can most benefit from this course include bass players who have just begun to learn to play. The master bass instructor himself states clearly and repeatedly throughout his course materials that it doesn’t matter if a bass player understands the notes, and it doesn’t matter if the player can read music or not. This course teaches fundamental fretboard techniques effectively so that students can learn to play correct notes from the beginning.
If a bass player already has some experience before entering the course, he or she will have the opportunity to “unlearn” previous bad habits and start anew. For experienced students, our opinion is that they should advance very rapidly in this course.
The course uses an intuitive teaching method in which the information or a technique is presented to the student, then the student practices the technique presented in the lesson until he or she is comfortable in duplicating the technique themselves on-the-fly. The course teaches multiple techniques which allow the student to advance rapidly.
Features & Highlights of the Course
The “meat” of the Bass Guitar Secrets course is the two hefty course books, or files. Although hard-copy versions are also available, we reviewed the downloadable (.pdf) version and were very impressed. The first part consists of 102 pages, while the second part contains 152. The layout is readable, and the text is densely packed with information.
With so many advantages, it’s inevitable that the course suffers from a minor downside– Although the lessons contain many charts, tables and notations, the accompanying links to music files seem clunky and may be difficult to navigate for people who aren’t computer savvy. Perhaps upcoming versions of the course will remedy this issue.
We recommend that you overlook the insistent tone of the sales pitch on the Bass Guitar Secrets website and move forward to actually begin the course. You will find an effective program for learning to play bass guitar, or learning to play it better. Although the course doesn’t feature video instruction, its audio files with bass guitar examples serve very well.
With the added pluses of online coaching and an active online community of bassists who are also studying the same guitar methods, you can’t go wrong with this guitar course. We recommend that you try the Bass Guitar Secrets course if you’re serious about improving your skills in playing the bass guitar.
